Hi there.
ReplyDeleteI have something to admit... I am a serial job jumper. I have a lot of experience with resumes, interviews and changing jobs. It's a terrible affliction and I'm trying my best to settle down.
From the job hunting perspective, I think your summary paragraph is almost too relaxed and not specific enough. "Responsible, hard-working, well-mannered (no one would say they were ill mannered...) graduate student seeking internship or entry level position in the Communications, Social Media, Graphic Design, and Photography field (social media is part of the communication field, which isn't really related to either graphic design or photography, but those two things are somewhat related to each other). Is creative and friendly (as opposed to unfriendly?). And has own reliable transportation (are you applying for a delivery position? Why is this in there?)."
I love that you have so many different educational experiences - a semester in the UK!? #jealous! Also, it seems like you have enough education for two undergraduate degrees. I would suggest using some of that information in your summary paragraph.
I'm slightly concerned I've given you feedback to writing a better resume for professional purposes and not enough critique about applying your resume to your character, "The Undercover Hipster." I myself did the same thing as you and shared my professional resume, so it seems we can figure this out together.
Thanks!
~Twin B
This is MADMOM by the way....
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe it this comment thread just cut me off again! Your thread has a thing that does not let me publish on the first go -- I lost all my critique for you. Grrr......!! Well here is what I said in a nutshell.
Undercover, great resume. Impressed with your French communication skills. Agree with Twin B that your opening is a bit choppy. Smooth it out and put all your heavy artillery in your summary. Something like "experienced professional with the ability to execute cross-functional communications in graphic design and social media." Something like that. Twin is right-- eschew the nice guy stuff and hit them between they eyes with all your fabulous skills.
Again, really impressed with that French! Maybe look for a job with a multi-national company.
Cheers!
MadMom
Hey Hipster,
ReplyDeleteIn my day-to-day job, I hire a lot of interns and recent grads. I took this into consideration when reviewing your resume.
As Twin B and MadMom mention, your first paragraph needs some help; I think this is the place where you can really express your personality through the writing, but it also needs to be succinct.
"Responsible, hard-working, well-mannered graduate student seeking internship or entry level position in the Communications, Social Media, Graphic Design, and Photography field. Is creative and friendly. And has own reliable transportation."
I would get rid of the fields, the "friendly," "hard working," "well-mannered," parts and nix the bit about transportation – try to infuse it with a trace of that attitude from your bio.
I would bump your experience up to immediately under that – that's usually what people want to peruse first. This should go in reverse chronological order, with jobs you are still at first, and then back from there. Be sure to utilize the same tense throughout past jobs, but change it to present tense for current work.
Also, something that I find really helpful is actually pinterest (IKNORITE?) – do a search for "Resume language" and it advises on good language to make your resume sound stronger. So, for instance, instead of
"owns and runs an independent production company, creates graphic designs for clients and personalized photography including event photography and custom art pieces."
You could say
"Operate an independent production company, conceptualizing and creating custom design, photography and art solutions for a portfolio of diverse clients."
Make sense?
Great job overall – and great skills!
A
This is good resume for starting out, Undercover. You keep things simple, which is good for any resume. Yours shows consistency of focus, variety of experience, worldliness, and hard work.
ReplyDeleteThe feedback from your group is great. Almost everyone mentioned your summary. As I noted in the lecture, a summary should be specific. Where would you like to work next? A social media job versus a photography studio job would give you very different skills. Someone recruiting for either would rather receive a resume looking for one or the other. If you want to pursue multiple fields, then tailor each resume to that field.
LinkedIn organizes Experience with job titles. This is a good formatting rule to follow. Your Intern and Designer designations in bold would give me a quick analysis of your career. They are more important than where you worked or the dates when you worked.
Your descriptions are to the point. With more experience, you can add more detail and more specific examples of achievement and acknowledgment.
Good work.
